Hawks up against the wall after loss to Manhattan team

MANHATTAN -- The Salina Hawks fell into the losers' bracket with a 14-4 loss to Manhattan Manko and fought off elimination with a 9-1 win over Junction City in the American Legion Class A Zone 3 tournament at Norvell Field.

Manko dominated the Hawks early, taking a 10-4 lead after three innings. Salina starter Danny Backes did not survive the first inning before being relieved by Jon Jones.

The Hawks only had three hits, two by Cole Dhabalt.

Salina came back in the late elimination game as Tim Moore struck out five in a complete game for the Hawks. Vince Froome had two hits in the game for Salina.

The Hawks (35-12) must now beat host Manko twice today to win the zone and qualify for the Class A state tournament. The first game of a possible doubleheader is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
