Hmmmm--couldn't wait 1 week for school to get out, just had to make the traffic problems worse before and after school. Smart move.

City briefs

Traffic control will be set up today to close Wayne Street between Fourth Street and Leland Way, the city of Salina announced through a press release.

Repair work will be performed to improve a railroad crossing at that location. Motorists should be prepared to find an alternate route.

The project is expected to be completed within three days and traffic should be reopened by Friday.

Salinan arrested on drug charges

Paul D. Allen, 34, 821 W. Ash, was arrested on numerous drug charges Sunday after officers with the I-135/I-70 Drug Task Force searched his home and found drugs and evidence of a marijuana-growing operation.

Lt. Jim Norton, task force commander, said officers found 124 grams of marijuana, or about a quarter of a pound, packaged in seven plastic baggies, and about two grams of methamphetamine. They also found growing lights and fertilizer that were indicative of a marijuana-growing operation, Norton said.

34-year-old man arrested after fight

A 34-year-old Salina man was arrested Sunday after a knife fight in the parking lot of the Log Cabin Motel, 440 N. Broadway, that resulted in an injury to Derrick A. Miles, 26.

Jason Gadsen, 1716 Summers Road, was arrested on charges of aggravated battery and disorderly conduct, Deputy Police Chief Carson Mansfield said.

Miles, who was bleeding profusely from an arm wound when police arrived about 9:20 p.m., was treated at Salina Regional Health Center. Gadsen had a chest injury but refused medical treatment, Mansfield said.

Winter wheat maturing slower

WICHITA -- The Kansas wheat harvest is getting nearer as the crop matures.

Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service reported that 19 percent of the wheat has now headed. But the crop is maturing slower than normal in the cool spring weather.

In its crop condition update released Monday, the agency said that the percentage of headed wheat is well behind the 61 percent average for this late in the season.

Crop condition was rated as 6 percent very poor, 13 percent poor, 37 percent fair, 35 percent good and 9 percent excellent.
