Woman to speak on Antarctica work
Jo Schwartz will speak about her experiences working for Raytheon Polar Services in "Taste of Adventure: Antarctica," being presented by Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure.
The program will be at 6 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Rolling Hills Conference Center. Reservations are required by Monday by calling 827-9488, ext. 117. Cost is $25 a person, which includes admission to the exhibit in the museum's Earl Bane Gallery, dinner and Schwartz's presentation.
Raytheon Polar Services is part of the United States Antarctic Program, dedicated to sustaining the Antarctic environment and funding scientific research. Schwartz will share her experiences working at McMurdo Station, the location of much of the subject matter of the current museum exhibit, "Wondrous Cold: An Antarctic Journey."
Weekend planned for grandparents at zoo
Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure will salute grandparents Saturday and Sunday during Grandparents Weekend, a partnership between the zoo, Salina Senior Center and Minority Outreach Task Force.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., special activities are planned throughout the park, including a Safari Scavenger Hunt; free souvenir photos, courtesy of Reflections by Roker; and the Zookeeper's Animal Enrichment Booth on the Overlook Patio. Trams will run, and children ages 12 and younger will be admitted free to the zoo and museum with a paid grandparent.

State Board of Ed candidate to speak
Christopher E. Renner, Manhattan, who is running as a Democrat for the 6th District Kansas Board of Education seat, will be at Moka's, 109 N. Santa Fe, from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday.
He is challenging incumbent Republican Kathy Martin.
Renner worked as a teacher and school administrator for 27 years. He has a bachelor's degree in theology and a master's degree in education.
Renner also will speak at 10 a.m. at Salina Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. His topic will be Horace Mann, founder of the common school movement and first U.S. commissioner of education.
