Before she turned her attention to addressing her fellow Sacred Heart High School seniors Sunday, Kate Augustine made sure to give a shout out to those in the audience ultimately responsible for everyone being there.
"Before I start, I'd like to thank all the mothers with us today and wish them a happy Mother's Day," said Augustine, senior class president.
When she was younger, she said, it was her mother who always told her that there was a right way and a wrong way to make decisions. The guidance of Christian faith can help determine the right choice, as college and adulthood present ever more frequent decisions, she said.
"God has a plan for each one of us, a path that we alone are to follow. My hope for all of us is that sometime during the upcoming years, during the continuation of our education, each one of us will have taken time to determine which path is the right path," Augustine said.
Consider too, ways of giving of yourselves to make the world better, she urged. Those could include careers serving others, such as nursing, religious life or teaching.
"I'm so grateful for the quality education I received at Sacred Heart. Thank you so much to the teaching staff for giving your talents, time and energy to all of us here today," she said. "You are the best, and I will think of you all, often."
The class of 46 students graduating Sacred Heart this year are a close-knit group, said seniors Ryan Stein and Marci Mauch, as they readied to march into the Sacred Heart Cathedral sanctuary before Sunday's graduation mass and commencement.
Their class had a senior barbecue the night before graduation, at Jerry Ivey Park.
Her lasting memories of her year as a senior undoubtedly will include the fun she had with the friends she made through her four years of high school, Mauch said. She plans to study biology at the University of Kansas.
Stein said his memories will include "the success in sports we've had." Stein, who plans to study computer engineering at KU this fall, was part of Sacred Heart's football team which reached the state playoffs this year.
