ABILENE -- Camp smoke, gunpowder and western songs will fill the air of Old Abilene Town Saturday during the Fourth Annual National Day of the American Cowboy.
Donations will be collected for admission, with money going toward restoration of Old Abilene Town.
Activities include train rides, gunfights, live entertainment, a chuck wagon meal and an ice cream social. At noon, James Holland will play his banjo on the stage in the Alamo Saloon. A lunch of hotdogs and chips will be available, for a donation, from noon to 2 p.m. At 2:30 p.m., Dave "Zerf" Zerfas will sing cowboy songs and Kansas ballads. At 3 p.m., Greg Heller will portray Captain Allen, a cattle boss from Texas.
Beginning at 5 p.m., a chuck wagon dinner of beef stew and biscuits -- cooked over an open campfire -- will be served. Cost is $5.
The Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad will operate its excursion train, with rides at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and a special short run at 4:30 p.m. Reservations also are being taken for a 10 a.m. ride to Woodbine on the Rail Bus. For information or reservations, call (785) 263-1077.
Stagecoach rides are available for $4 for adults and $2 for children ages 15 and younger.
The Dickinson County Historical Society will have its annual ice cream social at 6:30 p.m. At 7 p.m., The Sons of the Konza Prairie will perform.
The evening will end with the movie, "The Angel and the Bad Man," starring John Wayne. The movie will be shown outside, weather permitting, so bring lawn chairs.
