Bethany to honor three graduates

Bethany to honor three graduates

LINDSBORG -- Three graduates of Bethany College will be honored Saturday with the school's Alumni Award of Merit.

Receiving the award during a banquet and ceremony starting at 5:30 p.m. are DeVere Blomberg, Doris Carlson and Carol Gusenius.

Blomberg is a member of the Bethany class of 1951. After earning his master's degree in education from the University of Nebraska, he served in the U.S. Army and worked for 30 years as an elementary teacher and librarian in the Salina School District. He has participated in 57 Messiah Festivals and was tenor secretary of the Bethany Oratorio Society for 44 years.

Carlson graduated from Bethany in 1953. She taught first grade at Heusner Elementary in Salina for two years before deciding to stay home with her family. She has been active at Messiah Lutheran Church and volunteered with Meals on Wheels and Bethany Home in Lindsborg. All three of her children are Bethany graduates.

Gusenius is a member of the Bethany class of 1973. She later taught school for one year in Washington, worked as a deputy clerk in Douglas and McPherson counties and later worked for the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services. Since 1985, she has been self-employed. She has been broker/owner of Lindsborg Realty since 1989.

Phillipsburg seeking 2008 rodeo queen

PHILLIPSBURG -- Kansas' biggest rodeo is calling cowgirls to compete for the title of 2008 Phillipsburg Rodeo queen.

The contest is open to single women ages 17 to 26. Contestants will be judged in modeling, speech, interview and a written test, along with two phases of horsemanship.

The contest starts at 9:30 a.m. July 31 at the rodeo grounds. The rodeo queen will be crowned that night during the rodeo opening ceremonies.
