Vigil for murder victim is tonight
The family of Salina murder victim Beverly Logan is hoping to remind anyone with information about her death to contact police by staging a candlelight vigil tonight near Logan's home.
The vigil is set for 8:30 to 9 p.m. at the corner of Connecticut and Iron. Logan was found dead in her home at 1200 E. Iron about 3:30 p.m. Jan. 21.
"We're wanting to get this back out into the media, hoping to get some information from the public," said Logan's niece, Michele Wolf, who is helping organize the event.
Wolf said family members will be there, and the family has contacted Presbyterian Manor, where Logan had worked as a certified nurse's aide, about tonight's event, but that the public is welcome, as well.
Superintendent faces charges
OTTAWA -- A school superintendent in eastern Kansas is accused of child abuse in a case involving a 14-year-old girl.
Franklin County prosecutors have charged Jim Reece of Ottawa with child abuse, aggravated battery and aggravated intimidation of a victim.
Ottawa Police Capt. Randy Allen says the case is related to a weekend incident in Ottawa but has declined commenting further because the case is still under investigation.
Reece is superintendent of the Central Heights Unified School District 288, about 12 miles southeast of Ottawa. He became superintendent last year after serving as superintendent in the Kansas towns of Caldwell and Healy.
Man gets 120 days for enticing minor
PLATTE CITY, Mo. -- A former police officer who pleaded guilty to using the Internet to entice a minor for sex could spend about four months in prison, although prosecutors were seeking a six-year sentence.
Timothy W. Leighty, 37, Lee's Summit, was sentenced Thursday for child enticement and attempted statutory sodomy. He had admitted that he used the Internet to entice someone he thought was a 14-year-old girl and traveled to Platte County to engage in sex.
The "girl" was a detective with the Platte County Sheriff's Department and Leighty was arrested when he went to a site in the county where he expected to meet the "girl."
