Event to recognize autism month
In recognition of April being autism month, parents, grandparents, siblings and caregivers are invited to be part of an evening of fun and information for families with children who have autism spectrum disorders.
A family picnic will be at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Parish Hall, 230 E. Cloud. Registration begins at 5:30, with a family-style picnic dinner at 6. Activities and presentations by guest speakers begins at 7.
There will be door prizes, sensory activities, information booths and time to share experiences with other families.
Guest speaker Chris Banner has numerous college degrees and a successful career -- but was diagnosed with Asperger's disorder 10 years ago. Lori Burnshire is the other speaker. She is the mother of three teenage boys. Her youngest son is autistic.

Energy options to be discussed
A discussion of various energy options is set for 11 a.m. Tuesday in the conference room in the College Center at Kansas State University at Salina.
Panelists will include John Doll of Garden City, who will talk about coal and ethanol; Salinan Jerry Brown, on wind energy; Ed Plett, assistant professor of engineering technology at K-State at Salina, on wind energy; and Ken Shultis, K-State professor of mechanical and nuclear engineering, about nuclear energy.
Abilene community event is April 27
ABILENE -- The sixth annual Abilene Area Chamber of Commerce/Central Kansas Free Fair Community Mingle will start at 10:30 a.m. April 27 with a First Baptist Church service at the Eisenhower Park band shell.
From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., there will be activities for all ages at Central Kansas Free Fairgrounds, Sterl Hall and the Kansas National Guard Armory. There will be business booths, commercial and food vendors, entertainment at the band shell, door prizes, a climbing wall, karaoke, Cub Scouts pinewood derby, pedal tractor pull, children's inflatables and more.
A new feature this year will be the Dickinson County Career Fair, which includes 11 Internet-ready computer stations to help job candidates and employers.
