Salina Central repeat state boys golf qualifier

LAWRENCE -- A return trip to state was never a given. Not after Salina Central lost its top two players from last year's state qualifying team and had only one senior among its top six this season.

Now that the Mustangs have played their way back to the Class 5A boys state golf tournament, head coach Patrick Newell isn't exactly sure what to expect.

3A Track: SES will send three boys, relay team, two girls to state

FIVE INDIVIDUALS, RELAY TEAM QUALIFY FOR TROJANS -- At Marion, Southeast of Saline will send three boys, two girls and a boys relay team to the Class 3A state meet next weekend in Wichita.

The Southeast boys will be represented by Nathan Peterson, who placed third in the 400-meter dash in 51.81 seconds at the 3A regional. Brett Nurnberg finished third in the triple jump at 43 feet, 5 inches and Kendal Peterson qualified in the 800 meters by placed third in 2:06.79. Southeast's 400-meter relay team of Nathan Peterson, Mark Roesner, Cole Brightbill and Cody Smith also took third in 44.43 seconds.

Knight boys win 10 events -- three each by Donley and Drew Diederich -- but unable to overcome Beloit's depth; Beloit sweeps team titles

Sacred Heart had no trouble getting to the finish line first at the North Central Activities Association track and field meet Friday. The Knights came up just short, however, in the race for the team title.

The Sacred Heart boys had first-place finishes in 10 of 18 events at Salina Stadium during the annual league meet, including wins in all nine races that didn't involve hurdles.

But the Knights' team score of 188 fell just short of defending champion Beloit, as the Trojans used their depth to amass 193 points and edge Sacred Heart for the title.

Southeast baseball closes regular season with sweep of Russell

SE SALINE 12-14, RUSSELL 2-11 -- At Gypsum, Southeast of Saline closed the regular season with an NCAA sweep of Russell.

The Trojans won the opener in five innings, then held off the Broncos in Game 2 to improve to 13-5 overall and 5-3 in league play.

Trojans third, Knights fifth at Marion tournament

SE-SALINE THIRD, SACRED HEART FIFTH -- At Marion, Lyndon won the team championship and Southeast of Saline finished third, two strokes behind runner-up Goessel and one shot in front of Remington.

Lyndon had a 339 team score while Goessel shot 361. Southeast finished with a 363 total and Remington 364. Sacred Heart was next at 400.

SE-Saline softball sweeps Ellsworth

SOUTHEAST OF SALINE 5-3, ELLSWORTH 4-1 -- At Gypsum, Kristin Conley notched two more victories as the Trojans swept an NCAA doubleheader.

Conley (7-4) struck out nine and walked two while allowing four hits in the first game. Catherine Conley had three hits and Haley Mortimer two for Southeast, which totaled nine for the game.
