Pierson dazzles for Weis in Kansas spring game
LAWRENCE -- Tony Pierson took the handoff from Dayne Crist deep in the backfield, started off toward his right and then made a subtle move back to his left.
Just as a hole big enough for Charlie Weis to run through opened up.
Pierson pranced through it and then out-ran a pair of safeties 88 yards for a touchdown, the highlight of a big afternoon for the sophomore running back. He finished with 141 yards on only seven carries to steal the spotlight from Crist's debut in the Kansas spring game.
Kansas digs hole too deep against Kentucky
NEW ORLEANS -- Kansas managed to come back time and again this season, seemingly no deficit too big and no odds too long for a team full of overachievers.
The Jayhawks finally dug a hole too deep Monday night, and ran into a team from Kentucky with enough firepower to prevent them from digging all the way out.
After whittling an 18-point lead to five in the closing minutes, Kansas finally succumbed in the national championship game. The Wildcats made enough free throws down the stretch to preserve a 67-59 victory, bringing the scrappy Jayhawks' dream season to a disappointing close.
Team of destiny? Jayhawks starting to believe
NEW ORLEANS -- Some folks believe in fate and destiny, others find the notion absurd. Things happening for a reason, as if they're meant to be? A little too "Twilight Zone" for them.
Seems just about everyone from Kansas falls into the first camp.
Tyshawn Taylor points to a comeback win over Missouri, when the Jayhawks were down by 19 in the second half. Thomas Robinson remembers gut-check wins over Purdue and N.C. State, and the fact that North Carolina guard Kendall Marshall was hurt when Kansas ran into the Tar Heels.
Kansas, Ohio State meet in 'The Other Game'
NEW ORLEANS -- Welcome to "The Other Game" at the Final Four.
OK, so, the Ohio State-Kansas matchup may not have the fantastic freshmen, the outspoken coaches or blood-feud story line of the opening semifinal between Kentucky and Louisville. But this one still should be worth a two-hour investment in front of the TV set tonight.
Besides the chance to watch two top-line teams play for a spot in the national title game, the Buckeyes-Jayhawks game offers a rare opportunity to see two All-Americans going at it with everything on the line.
Robinson, Withey give Kansas big post presence
NEW ORLEANS -- Thomas Robinson and Jeff Withey are ready to tackle Ohio State star Jared Sullinger.
The way the two Kansas big men have been playing, Sullinger had better be ready, too.
The Jayhawks' inside tandem didn't get the chance to play against the Buckeyes' All-American in December, when he missed the second of two games with a bothersome back. Robinson in particular took advantage down low, scoring 21 points and leading the Jayhawks to a 78-67 victory.
Crist tops Kansas depth chart as spring begins
LAWRENCE -- No surprise here: Dayne Crist is listed atop the depth chart at Kansas.
The former Notre Dame quarterback transferred after the fall semester to play for new coach Charlie Weis, who recruited him to South Bend and now is attempting to rebuild a moribund program that finished 2-10 last season under Turner Gill.
Taylor's 22 lead KU to 80-67 win over Carolina
ST. LOUIS -- Nothing personal, Roy.
Tyshawn Taylor broke out of his slump in a big way Sunday, scoring 22 points and leading Kansas back to the Final Four with an 80-67 victory over former coach Roy Williams and top-seeded North Carolina.
The second-seeded Jayhawks (31-6) will play Ohio State on Saturday in their first Final Four appearance since winning the 2008 national championship.
