Norma Jean Sellberg
LAWRENCE — Norma Jean (Dyck) Sellberg, 74, of Lawrence, died Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Norma was born May 13, 1935, in Lindsborg to Bernhard and Lydia Anderson. She was raised in Lindsborg.
In 1957, she was married to Gilbert Dyck. He died in 1985. In 2001, she was married to Bob Sellberg in Lawrence.
Norma attended Lindsborg schools for 12 years and graduated in 1953. She received her B.S. degree in Elementary Education from Bethany College in 1957. She earned an M.S. in Curriculum and Instruction and an Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction and Special Education from the University of Kansas in 1970 and 1972.
Norma was a member of First Baptist Church in Lawrence for nearly 40 years. She sang in choirs, taught Sunday school and served on a variety of ministries.
Norma taught first grade in Waterville from 1957 to 1959. After 10 years at home raising her three children, she worked on grants and special projects at KU. She became an Assistant Professor at Kansas State University in 1976, where she coordinated the training program for teachers of students with Learning Disabilities. She secured grants for several projects, and co-wrote a child-use reading program, a college textbook on the topic of Consultation, Collaboration and Teamwork for Students with Special Needs and other journal articles and papers. In 1994, she formed a consulting business, Curriculum Solutions, Inc., specializing in issues related to curriculum adaptation. Norma retired as Professor Emeritus at KSU in 2000 and continued to run CSI until she sold it in 2003.
She was a member of several professional organizations including: Association for Children with Learning Disabilities and was state president several years. She was given awards for outstanding service to the organization three times. She was a member of the Council for Exceptional Children, and Division for Learning Disabilities.
She is survived by her husband, Bob, of Lawrence; sons, Greg Dyck (Cathleen), of Morgan Hill, Calif., and Kirk Dyck (Cathy), of Lawrence; daughter, Kari Woods (Bob), of Baldwin; sister, JoRene Rothwell, of Bonner Springs; and five grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, at First Baptist Church, 1330 Kasold, Lawrence 66049.
Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 13, at Smoky Hill Cemetery at the foot of Coronado Heights in Saline County, in her maternal family burial plot along with the pioneers who settled in Smoky Valley.
The family suggests memorials be given to the church and sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, Lawrence.
