Worst of winter storm moves out of area

The worst of this week’s winter storm moved out of the Salina area today, but high winds and heavy snow were expected in eastern and southern Kansas Friday and over the weekend.
In all, parts of western Kansas received as much as 7 or 8 inches of snow, but accumulations were spotty, said Kelly James, with the National Weather Service office in Goodland.
Goodland received just 2.3 inches, James said, while 7 inches was reported just north of Russell Springs, in Dresden and in Lenora, and 8 inches was reported in Grainfield.
But even though the snow has largely ended, James said wind will continue to be a worry for the next few days.
“The only real concern now is with the wind,” James said. “The snow is powdery,” so the wind can pick it back up. “It’s not really reducing visibility yet today.”
Roads throughout northwest and north-central Kansas were open, but snowpacked, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation.
James said winds are expected to stay in the 20-30 mile per hour range through most of Friday, and a winter weather advisory remains in effect until Friday evening in northwest Kansas.
Counties farther east, including Salina, remain under a winter storm warning through most of Friday.
