Central Christian receives large gift

McPherson -- Central Christian College in McPherson has received a gift of more than $800,000 from the estate of Altha Hudson, a graduate of the Central college class of 1937 and a resident of Grove, Okla., according to a news release from the college.

Hudson's time at Central Christian College began in 1935, during the Great Depression. She came to Central from Texas with a sister, Lela, at the urging of their brother, Ursi, who had attended a year earlier. The sisters put in many hours of hard work, primarily in the kitchen, to pay their school bill. Both graduated in 1937.

In 1987, the sisters established the Hudson Scholarship. After Lela married, Altha established a separate scholarship. Now, students benefit from both the Lela Honkenen Scholarship and the Altha Hudson Scholarship.

Their federal lawsuit against the Roman Catholic Diocese of Wichita sought to ban the policy adopted in September 2007 at St. Anne's Catholic School.
