Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper J.M. White, Saline County Sheriff’s deputies, and Lt. Tim LaPage of the Salina Fire Department, were trying to piece together what happened at 8:20 p.m. at the Union Pacific Railroad crossing at Donmyer Road near Old Highway 40.
The driver of the car, Andrew Bennett, 82, appeared to be OK as he visited with paramedics in a Salina ambulance, LaPage said.
White said Bennett was southbound on Donmyer and stopped with the front end of his car over the railroad tracks. As the train approached, the safety cross arms came down, leaving the car between them.
The freight train hit the car, destroying the front of the driver’s side, and pushing it off the tracks. When emergency vehicles arrived, the car was facing west on the north side of the tracks, but adjacent to them.
The freight train was stopped several miles west of the crossing.
Bennett told Trooper White that he was on his way to Florida.
Tripolar says....
I sure hope this gentleman makes it to Florida safely.
