Two arrested in connection with Hickory Tree burglary

Two teens face burglary charges

SMOLAN -- Saline County sheriff's deputies were sent to the Hickory Tree restaurant Thursday morning to investigate a burglary, and they returned to Salina with two suspects.

Sheldon Freeman, 18, of Smolan, and Brandon Luttig, 18, of Lindsborg, were arrested in connection with the burglary and theft of old coins, money, a combination safe, beer and soft drinks from the restaurant. Most of the $9,494 in property was returned, said Sheriff Glen Kochanowski. Estimated damage to a window screen that was destroyed was $25.

While interviewing restaurant owner Delroy Lee Holzworth and combing the crime scene for evidence, the deputies noticed Freeman and Luttig lurking in the area. Kochanowski said the deputies began to visit with them. In the course of the conversation, the two young men became suspects and were arrested.

The men face charges related to the burglary. Freeman faces additional charges of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

The drainage structure is over an unnamed tributary of Mulberry Creek and is about half a mile east of Brookville Road. The work will take a month.

No through traffic will be possible during construction. Local and emergency traffic will be provided access to private property within the sections of closed road, but only from the side of the tributary upon which the property lies.
