Shooting victim critical; Salina man, 28, arrested

MICHAEL STRAND
A Salina man was arrested and another is in critical condition after a shooting early Friday.
Deputy Police Chief Carson Mansfield said Justin W. Letourneau, 22, of Salina, was shot once and taken to Salina Regional Health Center by private vehicle just before 6:30 a.m. Friday. He was transferred to a Wichita hospital in critical condition.
Willie Jerome Smith Parker, 28, of Salina, was arrested on a charge of attempted second-degree murder. Other charges are pending, Mansfield said.
Police ask that anyone with information about the shooting call Crimestoppers, 825-TIPS, or Salina police, 826-7210.

I ask myself, "What if I'd allowed the both of you to hang out at my house instead of telling you, 'no, just catch up with me tomorrow, alright'..., or if I'd answered at least one of those three calls I received from you and Boogie an hour before they found you left alone at the hospital, what if?" Could I've been of any help, could I've??? I just can't quite understand what happen between the both of you, when just years, months, weeks, days and hours before you two were like best of partners ready for the big world ahead. Yo, I can care less what people say about the both of you, I know the truth! The thought of you two and the big dreams yawl shared, like The Cake Movement, will continue to live on in mind and in my music nomatter what life throws my way. I'm even thinking about starting Tro'b Entertainment as a tribute to you and Boogie. When I said, "I got 'cha, I got 'cha!" That goes for the both of your families also, I got 'cha! Today's your funeral, June 25th, 2009, I'll be there fam. This is a very sad story. Regardless of the victim's PAST involvement with law enforcement, etc. He is still a human being! He is at the VERY least someone's son! So he just got out of prison, does that mean he's a BAD person? This world is going to hell in a hand basket! Revelations is being played out right in front of our eyes, each and every day! This is the second murder in a WEEK! Don't go on what this young man's padt is. It's exactly that the PAST!! His family is suffering, unnecessarily, and all the bashing of this young man is HORRIBLE!! Everyone deserves a SECOND chance. May he rest in peace and his family find solice in the judicial system actually working! My thoughts and prayers are with the family! God Bless You!~

I think the compassion and maturity of folks has been thrown out the window. Who's to say whether or not this young man deserved every ounce of what he got. If the tables were turned and you were in his family's place, you would be heart-broken and upset to read and hear the things people have to say. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.I have lived in Salina for most of my life, and it's saddening to watch a town become so closed-minded and hateful.

OH-Panic the sky is falling. You people are such fraidy cats. The SPD is NOT obligated to release info that pertains to a case unless they find it will help them solve the crime. Especially crimes like these. "Why is the SPD not doing anything about these crimes?" THat's a good one. ARE YOU FOR REAL ? "oh, there must be a cover up, what are they thinking not letting us in on the what's and why's.' Also, about that "why are only the innocent people getting murdered" REALLY ??? for those of you that really knew these people... "What types of people did they run with?" First off, the SRHC ER treats many emergencies but the hospital itself is not equipped to treat a critical gunshot wound. Secondly, the "victims" in these recent crimes are no strangers to trouble. Maybe you should look THEIR names up in the public court records... themselves.

Heres a news flash... the people being shot and killed, stabbed, beaten, etc., are not your average innocent citizen. In their own home or whatever they associate with a dangerous crowd. My mom always told me, if you hang out with trouble, or look for trouble, you will find trouble. If you want to be safe, dont buy a gun. Use your brain and some common sense. Just in case you didnt have the best mom, pretend June Clever is your mom. Think to yourself would she approve of my being out at this hour, in this neighborhood, of my hanging out with this person or these people? If the answer is no then you need to distance yourself from the troublesome situation you are aibout to put yourself into. If you choose to continue down the wrong path because this is a free country and you have the right...well i hope your health insurance is up to date and your funeral services have been planned and paid in full. Its your life, just remember you only get one. There is no reset button to start over if you lose.

Happy in a small town.. says....
My husband is from the Salina area, I lived there from 1986 to 1990, moving from smallville western Kansas. At that time, it was a wonderful community to live in. Now...you couldn't pay me enough money to go back. We even have a difficult time visiting my dad who still lives there. It's so sad and so out of control. Give me Small town USA anyday:)

My wife and I used to live in Salina but moved away in 1990. I had been a life long resident of the area. I remember when there was a shooting maybe once every few years or so. Now it seems Salina has shootings on a weekly basis. We used to come to Salina to buy the kids school clothes in August. NEVER again! Salina has simply gone stark raving mad. You're a city with too many minimum paying jobs. (plenty of places to eat and drink) but from what I read, your city seems more concerned with second hand smoke than first degree bullits. The conservitive right in your community has simply lost direction. Your lack of community interest and obsession with intere$t earning fast food community has made you a moderen day Sodom. You used to be a fairly nice town. you couldnt pay me to bring my kids there ever again. Very sad indeed when you realize what Salina has become.

IMO, Salina has more shootings of innocent victims per capita than many large cities. The people who attend the festival deserve better than the criminal gang thugs who carry weapons. SHC needs a video and audio link to the Wichita hospital so patients can be treated in Salina without any delays.

There was not a 19-year-old brought in last night on murder charges. The jail log shows that a 19-year-old Salina male charged with attempted second-degree murder was returned to the jail because of some type of court action. for all those looking to leave Salina because you have had two shootings in a few weeks you should visit some of the places my job takes me to like Africa North Korea, India, Pakistan, Philippines, just to name a few where death is constantly around the corner, also New york, New Jersey, Virginia, Washington, California just to name a few states where I had to work for a time, these places had shootings almost daily. At this time I am in Norfolk Virginia and each day I look at the news and someone is either shot, stabbed or there is a small child missing and this is America. Salina may be getting a little big but it has not gotten to be as big as cities I have been to and I hope we can keep the GANGS and violence down, because I know it will never be eradicated, even though we would like it to be. we need to Pray for the Violence to end and our children to remain free of the gangs. My Heart felt condolences to the family's left behind by these tragedies.

IMO, Salina has more shootings of innocent victims per capita than many large cities. The people who attend the festival deserve better than the criminal gang thugs who carry weapons. SHC needs a video and audio link to the Wichita hospital so patients can be treated in Salina without any delays.

Mr Wearing, If you are aware of it, then why have you not reported it. He is not a minor, is charged with murder, and court records are public. Why the delay in reporting this? Would investigating be to much work for your reporters?

There was not a 19-year-old brought in last night on murder charges. The jail log shows that a 19-year-old Salina male charged with attempted second-degree murder was returned to the jail because of some type of court action. Murder and shootings are big news in Salina, and we'll always let our readers know about those. Ben Wearing Executive Editor

just have to say that before posting comments a person should get all of their facts. Such as....why the victim was airfflighted to Wichita. Sometimes waiting for info can be hard but...will save some from making stupid, inance remarks.

So a guy who is in the parking lot of a hospital needs a hospital to treat him has to be airlifted to Wichita! What is Salina Regional Health Center? So Salina Regional Health Center does not have an ER? Does veryone in Salina have to go to Wichiat if they need to go to the Emergency Room?
