STOCKTON - A total of nine felony charges of methamphetamine distribution were filed Tuesday morning in Rooks County District Court against Rooks County Sheriff Randy Axelson.
Axelson’s first appearance on the charges is scheduled for 11 a.m. Jan. 30 in Ellis County District Court. Axelson has been out of jail since Jan. 3, after posting $45,000 bond.
He was arrested Dec. 30, following a short investigation the included the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, deputies in the Rooks County Sheriff’s Office and officers in the Stockton and Plainville police departments.
The nine charges itemize nine specific incidents of alleged meth distribution by Sheriff Axelson, starting in mid-September of 2011 through Dec. 21, at locations such as the Rooks County Fairgrounds and various locations in and around Stockton; four of the incidents are alleged to have taken place within 1,000 feet of Stockton High School, which is a more serious felony.
Ellis County Attorney Thomas Drees, who has been appointed special prosecutor in the case, said Axelson’s Jan. 30 first appearance would be in Hays, for the convenience of attorneys and the judge, but that any further court actions would be in Stockton.
