Assaria man receives Purple Heart

1/22/2012
By Tim Unruh

Dan Manion had little to say after girlfriend, Dorothy Sparacino, and Sen. Jerry Moran teamed up to pin a Purple Heart on his suit jacket.
But Moran filled all verbal voids Sunday at American Legion Post 62, 142 S. Seventh, where he paid some long-overdue homage to the Vietnam veteran.
"I’m a little overwhelmed, but I thank each and every one of you for coming," said Manion, who lives in Assaria.
Moran, a Hays Republican, led a ceremony attended by a few dozen of Manion’s friends, family and some fellow veterans, to officially deliver Manion a Purple Heart for being injured in an Oct. 22, 1968, ambush by Viet Cong soldiers. He was struck in the head by shrapnel from a rocket-propelled grenade.
