Central Kansas Mental Health Center has recognized 14 staff members for their years of service. There are: 30 years: Dolly Willer, outpatient services. 20 years: Dan Byarlay, outpatient services therapist; and Glenn Gustitus, emergency services coordinator. 15 years: Diane Carrigan, psychosocial trainer; Pam Bantam Cooper, outpatient services therapist; JoAnn Dimmitt, community support services therapist; Steve McGaughey, case manager; and Roberta Pratt, file clerk. 10 years: Cindy Lawson, medical customer service representative; Angie Lobato, psychosocial trainer/case manager; and Ericka Lysell, case manager. 5 years: Missy Flores, evaluations clerk; Deanna Ryals, psychosocial trainer/mental health aide; and Becky Tounsand, data processor.

Roger Pearson, of Ellsworth County Medical Center, and Charlie Grimwood, vice president, regional development at Salina Regional Health Center, have been appointed to the 2009 Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. The award, created by Congress in 1987, recognizes quality and business achievements of U.S. organizations and publicizes these organizations' successful performance strategies. It is the highest level of national recognition for performance excellence that a U.S. organization can receive.

As an examiner, Pearson is responsible for reviewing and evaluating applications submitted for the Baldridge Award. The board is comprised of approximately 500 leading experts selected from industry, professional and trade organizations, education and health care organizations and government.

Awards may be given annually in each of six categories: manufacturing, service, small business, education, health care and nonprofit. Awards have been presented to 77 organizations.

Quentin Breese, a teacher at Southeast of Saline School, has been awarded a scholarship by the Kansas Association of American Educators (KANAAE), a nonunion professional educators' association serving teachers in Kansas. The $500 scholarship will be used toward Breese's continuing education courses at Kansas State University's College of Educational Leadership. KANAAE provides scholarships and minigrants ranging in amounts from $200 to $500 to both members and nonmembers. The next deadline for scholarship and minigrant applications is Dec. 10, 2009.

Two Saline County employees have been promoted. Lance Zurfluh has been promoted to corrections officer II in the Sheriff's department. Zurfluh, who has worked for the county for 1Ôªø1âÑ2 years, will be responsible for maintaining security in the jail.

Brandon Jones has been promoted to truck driver in the Road and Bridge Department. Jones had been a seasonal employee. Jones will operate various types of equipment and perform duties related to bridge construction, road and asphalt work.

Chief Warrant Officer 4 Jason Garr, of Salina, has been named Chief Warrant Officer of the year for Kansas. Garr serves as the tactical operations officer for Headquarters and Headquarters Co., 1st Battalion, 108th Aviation, Kansas National Guard, Salina. The award provides recognition for outstanding leadership, loyality, initiative and public service displayed by a warrant officer. Garr enlisted in the Guard in 1987 as a utility helicopter repairman. He graduated from officier candidate school in 1991. He also attended numerous military training schools and graduated from Fort Hays State University in 1994 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in education. Garr has served tours of duty in Bosnia and Iraq.
