Date set for Nelson trial

September date set for 3rd Nelson trial

A third second-degree murder trial for 21-year-old Salinan Cameron Nelson will be held in September.

The trial for Nelson, accused of shooting Mark H. Simpson, 38, on April 16, 2008, as he stood in the 500 block of South 10th Street, will begin at 9 a.m. Sept. 9 in Saline County District Court.

Nelson's two previous trials -- in December and May -- ended in mistrials being declared when jurors could not reach a unanimous decision.

Attorney Julie McKenna, who represented Nelson during both previous trials, was appointed to represent him again in the third trial. Nelson remains in Saline County Jail on a $500,000 bond.

Two men who had been subpoenaed to testify at Nelson's second trial and failed to appear in court were scheduled for hearings of their own.

Marcellus Hollis is scheduled to appear on a contempt of court citation at 1:30 p.m. June 10. Brennan Jefferson will appear at 1:45 p.m. June 10.

Two Nebraskans hurt in rollover

WaKEENEY -- Two Nebraska men were treated at Trego County-Lemke Memorial Hospital Monday morning after a crash on U.S. Highway 283 seven miles north of WaKeeney.

Lorenzo R. Ortiz-Mendez, 25, of Lexington, and Tommie J. Shoemaker, 49, of Brady, were treated in the emergency department but not admitted to the hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that Ortiz-Mendez was driving a pickup truck south on U.S. 283 at 6:20 a.m. Monday and fell asleep. The truck left the highway, hit a stop sign and guardrail, and rolled once, coming to rest in the east ditch.

Ortiz-Mendez was wearing a seat belt but Shoemaker wasn't, according to the patrol report.

Where he needs to be? It's obvious to anyone with a brain that Nelson is not guilty. Maybe the police should look for the real killer.
