New program to be unveiled at health care center

Health care center gets new program

The doctors in residency at the Smoky Hill Family Healthcare Center will soon be learning about a new way to run their practices.

An announcement of the new program, led by TransforMED, of Leawood, is set for 11 a.m. Friday at the health care center at 651 E. Prescott.

The training program is being supported in part by a $49,500 grant from the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund. It includes use of electronic patient records and health information technology, supporting patients in managing their health problems, innovations in scheduling, and alternatives to office visits.

Hospital chief, wife arrested for battery

ABILENE -- The chief executive officer of Memorial Health System and his wife are scheduled to appear in Dickinson County District Court on Jan. 22 on domestic battery charges.

The two are accused of causing bodily harm to each other in a confrontation that occurred late Dec. 28.

Mark A. Miller, 49, and Cheryl A. Miller, 49, were arrested by Dickinson County sheriff's deputies at their home in rural Abilene. Both face the same misdemeanor charge, according to the complaints filed in Dickinson County District Court.

Rental car's tires and rims stolen

All four tires and rims from a rental car parked at Hampton Inn were stolen overnight Wednesday, and the car was left sitting on a jack.

The tires were stolen off a four-door car belonging to Avis Rentals, McKinney, Texas, between 8 p.m. Tuesday and 6 a.m. Wednesday, said Salina Deputy Police Chief Carson Mansfield.

Loss was estimated at $600.

Hutchinson man falls asleep at wheel

MARQUETTE -- A 65-year-old Hutchinson man was injured Friday afternoon after falling asleep at the wheel of his pickup just east of Marquette.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Willard Ropp, 65, was driving east on K-4 just east of Marquette about 4 p.m. when he fell asleep and drove into the south ditch, striking a field-entrance roadway.

Ropp was taken to Lindsborg Community Hospital; his condition was not available Friday evening.

Ex-prosecutor sworn in as federal judge

WICHITA -- U.S. District Judge Eric Melgren was formally sworn in as the 27th federal judge in the Kansas judicial district Friday.

At 53, Melgren is the youngest member of the federal bench in Kansas. Fellow judges range in age from 65 to 101.
