New paint, carpet and bookshelves are among the upgrades on tap for Gypsum Community Library after $5,000 in gifts was received from the America’s Farmers Grow Communities contest.
Farmers in eligible counties applied for the donations from the Monsanto Fund. Winners were chosen in a drawing. Farmers chosen then designated the money to be given to a nonprofit of their choice.
Gypsum-area farmer Gary Olson was selected as the winner this year and last, and he designated the library to receive two awards of $2,500 each.
"It will be a big help to us," said Joyce Roe, librarian in Gypsum.
The latest gift will enable the library to finish its remodeling project, she said.
Olson told contest organizers that he made the gift-recipient choice because he thinks it’s important to keep libraries in rural communities, according to a press release.
Olson presented the second $2,500 check to the library at a ceremony Wednesday.
Saline County is among 1,245 eligible counties for the America’s Farmers Grow Communities contest. To learn more, go online to
