Western Kansas woman files harassment lawsuit

6/4/2009

A woman from western Kansas has filed a federal lawsuit alleging that she was fired by the Kansas Department of Transportation after she complained that her co-workers and supervisors sexually harassed her. Misty M. Pettigrew, 40, of Sharon Springs, lost her job in May 2008, five months after being hired by KDOT as an equipment operator trainee. According to the complaint, Pettigrew was told April 28, 2008, she was being recommended for termination “because of inappropriate behavior in the workplace.” The notice came days after she met with KDOT officials to complain that she had been the target of frequent sexual harassment. Pettigrew alleges that she was “groped, patted and grabbed by male employees and supervisors.” In the complaint, she describes being slapped on the buttocks and the use of crude and racially charged language.
