Railroads to share in stimulus funds
Railroad projects in Republic and Cheyenne counties are among five in Kansas to be selected to share in nearly $2.2 million in federal stimulus funding.
The state received $348 million for highway and bridge projects through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. ARRA allowed states to devote a portion of their highway and bridge funding to rail projects. The grants are intended to enhance economic vitality in the areas served by the railroads.
The Phillipsburg-based Kyle Railroad will receive $371,000 in federal funding to build 2,000 feet of new siding and a new switch at Nesika Energy, Scandia, in Republic County. The Nebraska Kansas Colorado Railroad will get $476,826 for a bridge rehabilitation project near St. Francis.
Most of the projects included matching money.
