KBI rules shooting justified

CLAY CENTER — An investigator with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation ruled Friday that a recent officer-involved shooting in Clay Center was justified. After meeting with Clay County Sheriff Chuck Dunn, Clay Center Police Chief Bill Robinson and Clay County Attorney Rick James, the KBI investigator ruled that the shooting of Clay Center resident Ronald Hughes was justified under the circumstances and the officers involved acted professionally. Hughes, a 66-year-old retired Baptist minister, was shot to death by a Clay Center police officer and Clay County sheriff’s deputy June 14 after Hughes pulled what was believed to be a gun on the officers responding to an early morning domestic disturbance call. The gun turned out to be a toy, but the KBI investigator said the officers could not have known that, and their use of deadly force was consistent with their training.
