ABILENE — An inmate from the Dickinson County Jail died early Friday at a Wichita hospital from a self-inflicted injury, the sheriff said. At about 4:40 p.m. Thursday, the inmate, Brian D. Ausherman, 19, was found unresponsive and not breathing in his cell. There were two officers on duty at the time; Ausherman was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation until emergency medical personnel arrived, said Dickinson County Sheriff Gareth Hoffman. Ausherman was taken to Memorial Hospital in Abilene and later to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, where he died about 6 a.m. Friday. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating the death. Hoffman declined to give details of how Ausherman injured himself until that investigation is finished. Hoffman said Ausherman was not under a suicide watch or any special monitoring while he was in jail. Ausherman, who was from the Manchester area, had been in jail since Feb. 13, Hoffman said. He was being held on two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and a preliminary hearing in the case was scheduled for March 5. He was also being held on a motion to revoke probation for an earlier conviction for aggravated indecent solicitation of a child.
