Abilene jail prisoner dies of self-inflicted injury

ABILENE — An inmate from the Dickinson County Jail died early Friday at a Wichita hospital from a self-inflicted injury, the sheriff said.
At about 4:40 p.m. Thursday, the inmate, Brian D. Ausherman, 19, was found unresponsive and not breathing in his cell. There were two officers on duty at the time; Ausherman was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation until emergency medical personnel arrived, said Dickinson County Sheriff Gareth Hoffman.
Ausherman was taken to Memorial Hospital in Abilene and later to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, where he died about 6 a.m. Friday.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating the death. Hoffman declined to give details of how Ausherman injured himself until that investigation is finished.
Hoffman said Ausherman was not under a suicide watch or any special monitoring while he was in jail.
Ausherman, who was from the Manchester area, had been in jail since Feb. 13, Hoffman said. He was being held on two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and a preliminary hearing in the case was scheduled for March 5. He was also being held on a motion to revoke probation for an earlier conviction for aggravated indecent solicitation of a child.

People need to GROW up. I'm a teen mom. I'm 17 and i have a 4 month old baby so does that make me a bad person? Don't think so. If the girl consented then whats the big deal? I don't know why the system only makes 1 person suffer the consequences. If she was ok with it then wheres her punishment? I think salina acutally the system needs new laws regarding EVERYTHING!

Bicker, bicker. Argue, argue. What's done is done. This young man is gone now. We should let him rest in peace. Remember, "let he who is without sin cast the first stone." I'm dropping my rock. How about you?

To concerned parent: if it were my daughter I'd be concerned about her actions with the boys she is dating NOW, will another boy end up in jail because of her I sure hope not, but if so, will the courts see a pattern in her actions & consider her in need of care & put HER into the system, because of lack of parenting ?????

Brian was a wonderful kid, I think that whoever pressed the charges against him was wrong. That girl probably did love Brian, Lord knows Brian loved her enough to go to Jail for her twice. And of coarse the Law is above Love no matter what.

I knew Brian. He was a misunderstood kid, but generally a good kid. I also know the "child/girlfriend" and her parents. They knew about the relationship from day 1. They let Brian live at their house. If anything I think they helped promote the relationship. My husband even told them all it was wrong, and told them they could get into trouble for letting it carry on. Apparently, only one person was doing the time for the crime. I do agree Brian was in the wrong, but I do not think his convictions should have rested solely on his shoulders. I think that the child/g-friend and her "parents" (if that's what you want to call them) are NOT totally innocent in this case. I hope this rests on their conscience. I hope they are happy now. R.I.P Brian

It should not of ended this way . Its to bad the courts labeled him and judge him like they did. Some of these laws need to change.

The "child" was his girlfriend, she was 14. If a freshman dates a senior, that's cool, but once he is past 18 it is a crime.......how about these highschool girls that get pregnant ????? are their boyfriends ever hauled in with indecent liberties charges ???? didn't think so.......wake up dickinson county and abilene, I guess it depends on who you are.
