Man shoots toe while cleaning gun

A Salina man shot himself in the toe Thursday morning while cleaning his gun in his home, a police department spokesman said.

Levi Riley, 30, told Salina police officers he was attempting to make sure the semi-automatic handgun was safe shortly after 9 a.m. when the gun fired, said Lt. Scott Siemsen, criminal investigation commander with the Salina Police Department.

Riley was in surgery at Salina Regional Health Center Thursday afternoon. A hospital spokeswoman said she did not know whether he would be admitted.
