Pets saved from house fire

Salina firefighters Monday afternoon rescued a dog and a cat from a mobile home that burned, but the home itself was destroyed.

According to Fire Marshal Roger Williams, firefighters found "heavy fire and smoke" when they arrived at the mobile home at 604 Rocket about 2:30 p.m.

No one was home when the fire was reported. The home was occupied by Travis Disney and his fiancee, Nicole Grider, who had a baby Sunday.

Because they had been told that a dog and cat were inside, firefighters quickly entered the house after they had knocked down the fire.

After an extensive search, firefighters brought out a dog named "Kilo" and gave her oxygen.

"The dog had sustained heavy smoke inhalation and was having a difficult time breathing," according to a news release issued later by Williams. "The dog was given oxygen via the animal oxygen mask which was donated to the Salina Fire Department by the Saline County Animal Shelter roughly 2 years ago. The dog "... did come around and was able to be returned to its owner breathing on her own."

The cat was found alive underneath some bedding material in the bedroom.

According to Williams' news release, while the cause of the fire wasn't yet known, " ... it is certain that the fire did originate in the kitchen area of the residence."

I know Travis, he's a good kid, and to see this is heartbreaking...but also heartwarming to see their pet rescued at the same time. Good to see a light when it's dark.
