Topeka boy killed in Tuesday crash near Brewster
BREWSTER -- High winds contributed to a Tuesday crash near Brewster that killed a 3-year-old Topeka boy, Pablo Bolanos.
He was one of seven people in a van that was westbound on Interstate Highway 70. A gust of wind caused driver Celia Bolanos, 28, of Topeka, to veer off the road into the median, where the van rolled at 1:50 a.m.
Pablo was in a car seat that was thrown from the van, Sherman County Sheriff Kevin Butts said.
"Either the car seat was installed improperly or never buckled at all," he said.
Celia Bolanos and the other occupants -- Linda Benitez, 10; Marcos Benitez, 11; Paloma Bolanos, 6; and Pedro Bolanos, 7, all of Topeka -- were taken by ambulance to Goodland Regional Medical Center. Butts said he believed none were seriously injured.
They were wearing seat belts, he said.
