Dog beaten to death with wrench

6/30/2009
ERIN MATHEWS
When her dog didn’t come when called, a Salina woman went into her back yard early Sunday and found her pet dead with a wrench sticking out of its side. Teresa Grover, 710 Garden, reported to Salina police that her black and white rat terrier was killed sometime between 9:30 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 a.m. Sunday. Grover had been away from home and when she returned she found her dog had been beaten to death, said Salina Deputy Police Chief Carson Mansfield. There were multiple cuts on the animal, and the wrench was stuck in its side. Mansfield said police have no suspects in the cruelty to animals case.

I really hated that your dog died. Especially in that manner. However, with the new story that came out and the likelihood that it was another animal (possibly even one of her other dogs), will the public outcry be as loud? sickofu had a point. We never have a problem condemning a person for violence against an animal. However, a man who commits violence against a baby (Tiller), or animals killing animals, gets no outrage like this. It seems very backwards to me.

No, nate, it's 4 dogs. You can have up to 4 dogs in Salina.

Was it a Craftsman wrench? Salina PD Pet Detective Carson Mansfield should check at Sears to see if any suspicious subjects have been in looking for a new wrench. They're gonna have to start registering them like handguns if this keeps up.

Not only the state of Kansas, but the nation need to make it a high felony for any animal cruelity. It has been proven that if they will hurt an animal they will hurt people too. I am SO sorry for your loss. I really hope this person is caught and punished to the maximum.

it was probably my old neighbor... he got me kicked out of my house (him and my landlord were friends) because my 5 lb maltepoo was barking too much while i was at work.... but i kept him in the house.

nate says....
I noticed the dog owner posted stating ownership of 4 dogs. I thought salina had an ordinance which limits a residence to 3 dogs. Nobody needs that number of animals in a residential district. Having said that crulty to animals is a precursor to increasingly haneous acts. Salina has a great animal control division that could have easily provided remedy for this situation. Dogs bark its just what they do. If little things like that could drive you to harm an animal get professional help. Call animal control then a therapist. I would rather live next door to someone who had a hundred dogs than next door to the person who could do this to an animal.

Seriously says....
Seriously who doesn't have a neighbor with a barking dog? My neighbor's dogs bark quite a bit... It's just part of living in the city. I think the SPD will do everything they can to catch this guy and I hope it is before he harms another person or animal.

We are a neighbor of this dog, and it was not a barker. And this dog was not neglected. It just makes me very sad to hear of this.

Troy says....
One of the markers of a serial killer is someone who kills animals. If there were complaints about the dog barking, I'd start looking there. It sounds like someone knew she wasn't home and took the opportunity to shut the dog up on their own. The police should ask the public to report any unusual animal deaths. There are crazy people everywhere.

Proud Basset Hound Mommy says....
Harry Lime, read the comment posted by the owner. She said that there are no negative reports about her dogs barking or any other issues! Like lablover said, lets hit you with a wrench a few times and see how funny you think it is then!

Proud Basset Hound Mommy says....
I think twiggy had the best comment in the entire post! Has anyone seen the movie "Fatal Attraction"? Sounds like something that would come out of that movie. I sure would like to know what's going on this town. It's not even safe to walk outside anymore without the fear of getting shot at or beaten to death with a wrench. What has happened to my beloved home town?
6/30/2009

hey Harry, would you find it humorous if someone jumped a fence in your yard?? I believe that is called trespassing, so not only did they do something horrible they also had NO RIGHT to be in her yard.

BTW, it says NOWHERE in the article that the owner did anything irresponsible. If the dog was barking, call the police!!

This is a horrible thing to do to a dog. I would suspect a neighborhood male age 14 to 35 years old. Someone who didn't like the dog barking at night or in the morning. I also predict the monster will be involved with drugs or booze. My condolences to the owner.
6/30/2009
says....
To the owner, my heart goes out to you. No matter the situation, the senseless act to kill a defensless animal is beyond cruel. I hope they find the person. But I know you will never be the same. Good Luck to you.

I have a rat terrier and she has never caused any harm to anyone. That is just Horrific and the party responsible should be punished as inhumanely as the dog was

I thought this story was humorous! What is even more funny is all the bleeding heart people posting their tear filled comments. People, it was a dog! The owner should also be held responsible if the animal was not being cared for properly.

Dog Fan says....
This is very saddening that someone thought it was okay to handle the dog this way. No one has the right to treat an animal this way. I have dogs and my dogs bark when someone comes near the fenced in property, but that it was they are supposed to do. That lets me know someone is around and hopefully deters the person from trespassing. However, I have begun leaving my dogs in the house when gone due to not trusting the neighbor and her family who seem unhappy with my dogs barking even though their 1 dog barks more than mine. I hope the owner of the poor dog stay on the PD to find who this was and the Journal needs to make a point of publishing who it was if ever caught.
6/30/2009
says....
After the outpouring that took place following the story the Journal ran about Bella the Beagle, I truely hope Mr. Mansfield is on this case. What happened to his beloved pet was a tragedy, but this is just pure sickness. Mr. Mansfield should have the upmost compassion for this poor lady and the loss of her family member. Perhaps, he can turn his anger felt towards the trappers towards the sicko that commited this crime.

I don't like barking dogs at that time of night not even my own. But I would never do that to an animal. That sicko better be stopped. But our PD are to busy doing check points for alcohol. Can they really catch the bad guys? By bad guys I mean theives and murderers.
6/29/2009
Cat-fan says....
I hope the police were able to get fingerprints off the wrench. This overreaction to a dog barking is probably not the only crime this person has committed. It should be easy to track down this criminal. In the meantime, keep your pets safe inside!
6/29/2009
freewillks says....
What kind of a sick moron would do such a thing. This town has become a town full of sick minded folks. If the Dog was barking call the police, make them earn the money we pay them. Second I can tell you unless someone comes forward the crime will never be solved, the PD has little incentive to solve this crime as the will not make any revenue with a conviction. Also wanted to know why nobody herd the poor dogs cries? Every one of the neighbors had ear plugs in?
6/29/2009
says....
It's amazing the horrible sick acts people are capable of. My thoughts go out to the family.
6/29/2009
twiggy says....
This is unbelievable....what kind of a sick monster would hurt a defenseless animal? Oh the dog barked? It nipped at you? Really? It's a rat terrier!!! Wow, can you not just walk away? I feel so terribly bad for this woman and I hope she knows her grief is shared by many. Police do not "like" animal calls but they should know that anyone that commits a crime against an animal is a threat to humans as well. This is a terrible tragedy and there needs to be swift and harsh retribution for the perpetrator, to send the message that animal neglect / cruelty will not be tolerated by the citizens of Salina.

Even if the dog was barking, a call to the police should have been made. Beating an animal to death is not an appropriate response to a barking dog. It's a grossly abnormal and cruel act. I am sorry for the owner and sorrier for the animal that suffered. Don't blame the victim!
6/29/2009
owner says....
I am the owner of the dog that was killed with a wrench. There are many irresponsible pet owners out there but I would like to think I am not one of them. I have my Vet. Assitant Certificate and I do volunteer work to help the welfare of other animals. I infact own(ed) 4 dogs. They sleep inside @ night as to not disturb the nieghbors. However, all of my nieghbors have dogs as well.I take them out to the fenced yard in the morning and then when I am ready for work, I bring them back inside. Then when home for lunch they go back outside briefly and then back inside until I return from work in the evening. They then spend the most time outside @ this time when I bring them in to go to bed. As far as being noisy, one of my dogs is a barkless breed, one is older not very active, the other a puppy and of course my beloved Rattie. Several times in conversations with different nieghbors I have asked if my animals were noisy or a nuisance in any way and I have not ever gotten a negative report.Thank you for hearing me out. Whoever thought it was necassary to so violently kill the most loving, trusting and playful of the bunch really needs to come forward, be responsible for once and atone themselves.
