A Jacksonville, Ill., man was cited for unlawful discharge of a weapon after his pistol discharged while he was showing it to someone and the bullet struck a wall at Candlewood Suites.
No one was injured when John S. West’s .380-caliber Keltec pistol discharged at 7:45 p.m. Saturday in Room 205 of the hotel at 2650 Planet, said Salina Deputy Police Chief Carson Mansfield.
West was issued a notice to appear in court.

Dave says....
accidents do happen, but don't play with the guns. That gun did not go off by itself,it was being handles...carelessly,he should recieve a citation at least as severe as careless driving. The danger here is someone innocent could have been killed or maimed.

Gun Safety First says....
This could have been worse. I read about a guy sleeping in one motel room when some idiot fired a gun in the next room. The bullet penetrated the wall and lodged in the sleeper's spine, causing him to be paralyzed from the neck down. Don't ever pull the trigger on a gun unless you're on the target range!

don't play says....
my cousin bought a .22 and was playing with it,pointing at others just joking around and thought it was unloaded,He was about to pull the trigger when i grabbed it from him and found there was a bullet in the chamber,That would of been the end of his and somebody else's life

Weapons says....
All weapons safety's can malfunction! Have worked on military weapons for more then 20 years and have seen even them malfunction at time. The best safety for a weapon is to make sure it is not loaded until you are ready to use it!

KD says....
reminds me of the time when I was in Nam and I kept telling my bud that the 45 would not fire unless I squeezed the grip saftey.. In a matter of seconds not even touching the grip safety the pistol fired. Never assume that a gun is safe and never point it at anyone unless you intend to use it. My friend had moved in a split second and was not harmed, thank GOD. That moment still haunts me because I would have been resposible for his leg being blown off. have never pointed a gun at anyone since that moment. I wonder if there may have been alchohol involved in this accidental firing?

T Jefferson says....
First, guns don't just go off. Second, never put your finger on the trigger unless you intend to fire it. Third, if your going to own a gun then learn how to clear it and always assume it is still loaded.

CHRIS says....
He should be cited. You don't play with real guns. That's what my parents taught me anyhow!

It's a Kel-Tec! They don't have a saftey on them. If one is in the chamber then it's hot!
