COLBY -- A big gift from the Patricia A. Embree Trust No. 1 is aimed at helping Colby Community College and several endeavors in Colby.

The trust has given approximately $1 million to the college and $370,000 to the Thomas County Community Foundation.

A longtime Colby resident, Pat Embree graduated from Colby High School in 1950. She met her husband, Max, while attending the University of Kansas, and they were married in 1953.

After graduation from KU, the Embrees moved to Colby in 1955.

Farmers and ranchers, the Embrees were active members of the college, the Prairie Museum of Art and History, and the Thomas County Historical Society.

Pat died in October 2005, and Max died in July.

A portion of the gift will directly assist the college, and other money will be used for academic enhancement, hiring and retaining master teachers of stature and for continued support of the Max Pickerill Lecture Series, said Nick Wells, executive director of the Colby Community College Foundation, in a press release.

The Thomas County Community Foundation has established the Patricia A. Embree Trust Fund that will provide charitable, educational, literary and/or cultural entities and programs located in Thomas County, said Melinda Olson, foundation director, in the release.

Such entities and programs include, but are not limited to, the Prairie Museum of Art and History, Pioneer Memorial Library, Senior Progress Center, senior citizen services such as RSVP and Meals on Wheels, Food Bank of Thomas County, art and painting workshops and shows, history and Kansas humanities programs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, music workshops, programs, festivals and shows.
