Church notes

n Singers and those who play musical instruments are invited to audition for a new rock/reggae-style praise band from 5 to 6 p.m. Sundays at University United Methodist Church, Claflin and Santa Fe streets.

The band has a core of musicians, including two lead vocalists, but more instruments are needed, along with substitute performers.

The initial list of songs includes "Awesome God," "Cry of My Heart," "I will Call Upon the Lord," "I'll Fly Away," "Lord I Lift Your Name on High," "Open Your Eyes," "Sanctuary" and "Wade in the Water."

For the lyrics, Google the titles or call (785) 221-2881 for a music CD, lyrics and chords.

n CAWKER CITY --A Catholic Mass is planned for 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Waconda Lake.

The Mass will be in the historic Hopewell Church, near the west entrance to Glen Elder State Park.

The Rev. Don McCarthy, a retired priest living in Cawker City, will preside and preach at the special Mass.

n Catholics Returning Home, a six-week program, begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Parish Center, 230 E. Cloud.

Sponsored by the three Catholic parishes in Salina, the program is offered three times a year and is structured as a support group.

The program is an invitation to those who have been away from the Catholic Church for a while to consider renewing their relationship with the church. It provides an update of the Catholic faith, explains the Sunday liturgy and addresses questions. For more information, call 493-0090.

nTrinity United Methodist Church, 901 E. Neal, is having a "Not Your Ordinary Birthday Bash," which includes a "Bee Green Fair" from 3 to 5 p.m. Sept. 13. Various businesses, local government departments, institutions, organizations and private citizens will provide information related to being green. There will be samples and door prizes.

After the fair, participants may enjoy a potluck supper and birthday cake from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Top the evening off with the "Not Your Ordinary Church" Trinity-style variety show from 6:45 to 8 p.m.

n A Menninger Bible Study, developed by Flo Menninger in 1898, is offered from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Sundays from Sept. 13 through April at First Covenant Church, 2625 E. Magnolia.

There will be a $20 charge for class materials. To sign up, call the church office, 823-3792, or Judy Marshall, 827-5588.

The Menninger course is a systematic study of the Bible, chapter by chapter and book by book.

n First Presbyterian Church Christian Education Wednesday programs begin at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 16 at 308 S. Eighth.

Programs are available for children age 21âÑ2 through high school seniors.

n CONCORDIA -- Shane Sanderson will speak at a Teens for Christ Rally 7 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Brown Grand Theatre.

Sanderson heads the Southside Youth Outreach in St. Joseph, Mo.

The rally will be open to the public. An offering will be taken.

The group Emanation, from First Christian Church, of Concordia, will provide music.
