Church notes

The fall installation of the "For a Season" concert series is 5 p.m. today at St. John's Missionary Baptist Church, 215 S. Chicago.

The theme is "My Name is Victory," and the concert features a collection of youth singers from Salina, directed by Bridget Favors.

The choir will also perform in the 10 a.m. Sunday service at the church.

The public is invited. For information, call Joyce Thomas, 827-7082.

Saturday's concert is the third in the "Love Divine in 2009" series. It began Jan. 31 with "Learning," then Obedience on May 30, and Victory on Saturday. The final concert, Endurance, is Oct. 31 at the church.

Singers and those who play musical instruments are invited to audition for a new rock/reggae-style praise band from 5 to 6 p.m. Sundays at University United Methodist Church, Claflin and Santa Fe streets.

The band has a core of musicians, including two lead vocalists, but more instruments are needed, along with substitute performers.

The initial list of songs includes "Awesome God," "Cry of My Heart," "I will Call Upon the Lord" "I'll Fly Away," "Lord I Lift Your Name on High," "Open Your Eyes," "Sanctuary" and "Wade in the Water."

A free showing of the PG13 movie "Pay it Forward" is 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Belmont Boulevard Christian Church , 2508 Belmont.

The movie is free and open to the public.

Chrissy Brown, of Salina, is the Thursday Mothers' Hour speaker, 9:15 to 10:45 a.m. at First Covenant Church, 2625 E. Magnolia.

In "Looking for God and Finding His Will," she will tell of being a mother to two children, one of them with cerebral palsy.

Mothers' Hour is an inter-denominational ministry that's meant to give encouragement to women and parents of preschool and school-age children.

There is no charge to attend, and the child care is free.

CAWKER CITY -- A Catholic Mass is planned for 7:30 p.m. Sept. 6 -- Labor Day weekend -- at Waconda Lake.

The mass is in the historic Hopewell Church, near the west entrance to Glen Elder State Park.

The Rev. Don McCarthy, a retired priest living in Cawker City, will preside and preach at the special Mass.

A Menninger Bible Study, developed by Flo Menninger in 1898, is offered from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Sundays from Sept. 13 through April at First Covenant Church, 2625 E. Magnolia.

There is a $20 cost for class materials. To sign up, call the church office, 823-3792, or Judy Marshall, 827-5588.

The Menninger course is a systematic study of the Bible, chapter by chapter and book by book.

First Presbyterian Church Christian Education Wednesday programs begin at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 16 at 308 S. Eighth.

Programs are available for children age 2 1/2 through high school seniors.
