Church notes

n "Amazing Grace" will be shown at 6 p.m. today at First Baptist Church Night at the Movies, 843 Lewis.

Beverages and popcorn will be served. Donations are accepted.

Amazing Grace is based on the story of William Wilberforce and his quest to end the British slave trade.

n The Singing Saints, a 50-voice concert choir, performs at 7 p.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church, Ninth and Crawford streets.

The award-winning choir from Saint Paul Lutheran High School, Concordia, Mo., has toured annually since 1973 and has logged more than 1,000 appearances in 29 states and Canada. In 1994 and 2006, the Singing Saints performed as part of a mass choir in Carnegie Hall, New York City.

There is no charge for admission, but an offering will be taken. The public is invited.

n CONCORDIA -- St. Joseph, Mo., youth ministry director Shane Sanderson will speak at 7 p.m. today at a Teens for Christ Rally at Brown Grand Theatre.

Sanderson heads the Southside Youth Outreach in St. Joseph.

The Breakout! youth praise band will provide music.

The program is free and open to the public.

n Bill Lucero, an advocate for peace and peaceful solutions, will speak on the death penalty at the 10:15 a.m. service Sunday at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 901 Martin.

He has been widely quoted in news stories around the state regarding this year's Senate Bill 208, providing for abolition of the death penalty.

Lucero's father was murdered in New Mexico in 1972, and he has been an advocate for abolition of Kansas' death penalty since its enactment in 1994, according to a news release.

Lucero leads a support group for victims' families, Murder Victims' Families for Reconciliation.

Lucero is a member of the Topeka UU fellowship and has been an advocate for civil rights since the spring of 1965. He has lobbied in Topeka and elsewhere for peace issues and a healthy democracy.

n Mommies & munchkins, a group of mothers and their children, infant through kindergarten, meets at 7 p.m. Monday at Salina First Church of the Nazarene, 1425 S. Ohio.

The group, which meets monthly, is meant to foster friendships and sharpen mothering skills through workshops, mentoring and sharing resources.

Refreshments and child care for children up to age 5 are provided free.

n PORTIS -- A prayer service for the Scott Noel family is 7 p.m. Wednesday at Portis Grace Brethren Church.

Noel was murdered March 25, 2008, in his rural Osborne County home.

The Osborne Catholic Church Bell Choir will provide special music.

Child care is provided.

n WELLS -- Priscilla Yotter, of Eugene, Ore., will present "Writing to Make the Law of Attraction Work for You" at a workshop from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. March 28 at Sunset Spiritualist Church.

The workshop focuses on understanding the law of attraction and how to use it to be an effective creator.

n ABILENE -- a chicken noodle dinner is planned from 5 to 7 p.m. March 28 at Mount Pleasant Evangelical Presbyterian Church on Daisy Road in Abilene.

Donations will be accepted.

nFellowship Baptist Church plans to celebrate its 30th year in Salina and the one-year anniversary of the Rev. Patrick Armstrong's service to the congregation with its FBC Homecoming on March 29.

Randy Ledbetter, of the Singing Ledbetters, will lead the 11 am. service, followed by dinner on the grounds and an afternoon Ledbetter concert.

Among the goals is to set an attendance record with 100 people joining in the morning service.

There is no cost for the meal or the concert, but donations will be accepted during the concert for Randy Ledbetter Ministries.

The church is located at the corner of 11th and Prescott streets.

n "The Jesus Film" will be shown for free in Spanish at 6 p.m. March 29 and in English at 8 p.m. April 19 at Salina First Church of the Nazarene, 1425 S. Ohio.

The March 29 showing will be inside and the April 19 showing is planned for outside, weather permitting. Bring a lawn chair.

Prior to the April 19 movie, hot dogs, chips and a drink will be available for a donation.

The movie nights are a fundraiser for a trip to Pilar, Argentina, to show the film, and to donate projection equipment to Nazarene churches in the area.

n The annual potluck reunion of the former St. Paul's Lutheran church of rural Mentorwill be at 6 p.m. March 29 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 743 Magnolia, Salina. All former members, pastors and friends are welcome.

Please bring a covered dish for potluck and your own table service. Coffee and tea will be provided.

n The high school youth group at Belmont Boulevard Christian Church, 2508 Belmont, will serve lunch following the worship services March 29 and April 5 in the church parlor.

Donations go toward the 2009 mission trip.

n An AARP Driver Safety Program is March 30 and 31 at First United Methodist Church, 122 N. Eighth.

Times are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. both days.

To register, call the church office at 825-0228.

The program is designed for drivers 50 years and older. Licensed drivers completing the course are entitled to a discount on their car insurance premium.

Fees are $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members.

n The bands Pilot for Kite and Bright Light Parade perform at 7 p.m. March 31 at the All Out Tour at Salina First Church of the Nazarene, 1425 S. Ohio.

Admission is $5 at the door.

nThe Salina Bible Church Women's Getaway Weekend is April 3 and 4 at Webster Conference Center, 2601 N. Ohio.

All females high school age and older are invited. Mary Englund Murphy, of Tulsa, Okla., will speak on the theme "Walking on High Hills."

Included in the weekend will be three meals, games, crafts and fellowship. The cost is $70. Registration deadline is March 23.

n A dramatic and musical portrayal of "The Living Last Supper" is 10:45 a.m. April 5 at Salina First Church of the Nazarene, 1425 S. Ohio.

n A Palm Sunday cantata is set for 7 p.m. April 5 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 743 E. Magnolia.

The Ellsworth Community Choir, Redeemer Lutheran Choir and instrumental musicians from Kansas Wesleyan University will present an hour of "A Mighty Fortress," a festival of hymns.

Judy Weber, of Salina, will play the 11-rank organ, and Niki Svaty, of Ellsworth, will accompany on the piano.

Donations will be accepted and will be given to the Salina Emergency Aid-Food Bank.

n The Salina First Church of the Nazarene located at 1425 S. Ohio plans an Easter egg hunt, 10 a.m. April 11.

Bring a basket and a friend.

n The high school youth at Belmont Boulevard Christian Church, 2508 Belmont, will present a drama, "The Rock," at the Easter Sunrise Service, 7 a.m. April 12 in the church sanctuary.

Breakfast follows.

n Micah Parker will present a message about "Trust" at 7 p.m. April 25 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 743 E. Magnolia.
