Suspect in truck, tractor theft arrested

A 2004 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck that was stolen in Salina was found abandoned along Interstate Highway 70, and a suspect in the theft was later arrested in Russell County driving a stolen John Deere tractor.

Brian L. Brungardt, 37, of Wichita, is accused of stealing the truck and damaging a wishing well yard statue, flower pot, dining room chair and double-paned sliding glass door at 1549 Austin Circle between noon Friday and 11:50 a.m. Sunday, Salina Deputy Police Chief Carson Mansfield said.

According to a police report, Edwin F. and Carolyn K. Garrison returned home to find that someone had broken into their home, eaten a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken and stolen their pickup truck. Mansfield said the Kansas Highway Patrol located the truck later that day on I-70 nearly 50 miles west of Salina in Russell County.

A Russell County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman said no information would be released until formal charges are filed today.
