The power of Faith

1/28/2012
By MIKE STRAND

Lots of people pray for lots of things, but how many people in intense pain would be willing to take the leap of faith required to stop taking the medicine that, at least, keeps the pain at bay?
Chandler Sherwood made just that decision in May 2010 when the then-fifth-grader at Southeast of Saline told his parents, Brandon and Dawn, and his doctor that he wanted to remove the pump that was pushing painkillers 24/7 into his body.
The Sherwoods, who live near Assaria, recall that day vividly, including Chandler’s revelation at the doctor’s office.
"I told Dr. Fahed that the Lord had told me it would be OK," Chandler said.
"He hadn’t told us God had spoken to him until he told the doctor," Dawn said.
Chandler, now 13, had heard the voice the night before, in the middle of the night - and not in his head.
"It was a humble voice, telling me, ‘It’s going to be OK.’ I knew my parents and sisters were upstairs asleep - it wasn’t one of them."
Dawn said, "You have to know Chandler. He is very spiritual ...," adding that her son prays every night before going to bed, "not because we tell him to, but because he chooses to do so."
Chandler said the night he heard the voice, "I was praying really hard. I was about to break down."
