Thieves caught in the act drop the loot

A man who was returning an item to a Salina friend's house late Thursday saw three people he didn't know leaving the home in the 400 block of West Jewell Avenue with his friend's televisions and other belongings.

The man confronted the thieves and followed them as they walked down the street, getting close enough to run up behind one of them and stomp on his feet, causing him to drop a 36-inch LG television, said Capt. Mike Sweeney of the Salina Police Department.

During the incident, which occurred between 10 p.m. Thursday and 1:10 a.m. Friday, the man eventually was able to flag down a passing motorist who had a cell phone he used to call police, Sweeney said.

A thief set down items he was carrying and chased the man with an expandable baton he pulled from his pocket, Sweeney said. The thieves also threatened to remove from its case a Remington 12-gauge shotgun they were stealing.

Ultimately, the thieves left the area when they were picked up at the intersection of Pershing Street and Ellsworth Avenue by a green Chevrolet Blazer, Sweeney said. By then, they had abandoned the items they were attempting to steal on Ellsworth Avenue between Ninth Street and Highland Avenue, Sweeney said.

The items stolen, which included the shotgun, a 46-inch Sharp TV, Samsung and Sony DVD players, a Playstation 3, a Fender Telecaster guitar, and assorted CDs, were recovered unharmed, Sweeney said. The LG TV was broken, as was a window in a door where entry was gained to the house, he said.
