Teens learn baby-sitting skills

“This looks pitiful!” Alexcis Barnes said as she finished her first attempt at putting a cloth diaper on a baby.
But after a couple more tries, she was doing better.
“I’ve used disposable diapers before, but not cloth,” the 12-year-old said, passing the baby mannequin to another girl, and getting ready for the next lesson.
Barnes and 18 other girls spent Monday in a seven-hour baby-sitting class sponsored by the Girl Scouts; at the end of the class, each got a Red Cross certification saying she had completed the course.
It’s a class Girl Scouts has offered for several years, both over spring break and as part of the city’s summer recreation program, said instructor Shelly Harris.
And while Monday’s class was made up of all girls, Harris said the summer program often includes several boys, too.
“Sometimes, the boys show up the girls,” Harris said. “They’ve taken care of a little brother or sister, and really know what they’re doing.”
