CLAY CENTER — A Clay County jury convicted a Topeka man of attempted murder Wednesday after hearing a jailhouse recording of his admission and testimony from a Clay Center woman about an argument that led to her being shot in the leg.
The jury deliberated for about an hour before finding Tracy A. Hackney, 41, guilty of three felonies — attempted second-degree murder, firing into an occupied vehicle and possession of contraband in a correctional facility. Hackney was found to be in possession of a cigarette lighter while an inmate in county jail awaiting trial.
His sentencing is set for 9 a.m. Sept. 11.
Clay County Attorney Rick James said the state rested its case Tuesday after presenting nearly a full day of witness testimony about the Dec. 4 incident at a junk yard in the 400 block of Bridge Street in Clay Center.
