Police say a Salina man driving what was believed to be a stolen service van damaged eight vehicles early Wednesday that were parked in a three-block area of West Iron Avenue.
Deputy Police Chief Carson Mansfield said that at about 3 a.m., Jacob M. Johnson, 24, 856 Seneca, stole a Comfort Heating & Air-Conditioning service van that was parked at an employee's residence at 126 S. Ohio.
The van was traveling west on Iron Avenue at 3:06 a.m. when it sideswiped five vehicles parked on the north side of the 500 to 700 blocks, Mansfield said.
The van then pulled into a driveway in the 800 block of West Iron, Mansfield said. As it was being backed out, the van struck the rear of a seventh vehicle, causing that vehicle to strike an eighth vehicle.
Johnson was arrested for multiple violations, including felony theft, driving while intoxicated, driving with a suspended license, driving with an open container of alcohol, giving false information at the accident scene and leaving the scene of an accident, Mansfield said.
Total cost of damage to the vehicles has not been determined, but Mansfield said the damage was substantial.
