'Extreme'
makeover
needed

When it comes to posting comments about stories at our Web site, salina.com, it doesn't take much for some of our readers to get worked up.
But some of the comments about our story in Monday's edition regarding the Tutwiler family, of Chapman, putting their "Extreme Makeover" house up for sale have been nothing less than disgusting. A few samples:
n "As far as I'm concerned, GOOD RIDDANCE to these people! They were simply squatters in Chapman and had no intention of becoming members of this community."
n "WOW! I can't believe how rude the people are in Chapman."
n "I live in a 50k house and people talk about me behind my back and no one feels sorry for me. Boo hoo. HOW COME? Because that's life, get over it."
n "What a snotty little town. And from what I had seen of it before the tornado, you really didn't have much to be snotty about."
Yikes!
A little background: After Patrick Tutwiler was shot through the neck while on military duty in Iraq, the TV show "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" and a whole lot of Chapman and area volunteers pitched in to build his family a home. As with a lot of others in Chapman, the Tutwilers lost their home to the 2008 tornado.
Patrick's wife, Crystal, told Journal reporter Tim Unruh they've decided to move because of the whispers, rumors and town's treatment of their family.
To those of you frothy at the mouth about Crystal Tutwiler's comments: Are your lives so utterly devoid of substance that you have nothing better to do than gossip about this family? The Tutwilers aren't happy in Chapman and want to move on. Why is that reason to spread rumors about this family, especially a family whose dad took one in the neck for all of us?
For those of you ripping Chapman: A family in town isn't happy and wants to move. That hardly means that all of Chapman treats all outsiders horridly or even did in this instance.
And finally, an admonition from Moms everywhere:
"If you can't say something nice about someone, then don't say anything at all."

I understand that people talk. We may not always like what they have to say but we live with it. That is not a reason to sell a house that so many people came together to build. They took time out of their lives to help another. Will thier work be for nothing? For a family that has made it through so much worse, you should not let words or actions of others bother you. Dont we teach our kids that words are words and they cant hurt us. Why dont we listen to what we say. I dont think that anybody has the right to say anything about this man or his family. He went and fought for our freedom. That should be all that matters to any one.

I was a little shocked when I first heard that the family was selling the house. Of course with that news was the story of the family being mistreated by the community. I had to wonder though, "Who contacted the Salina Journal?" It just seemed a little odd to me.
I suppose it is inevitable that some people no matter WHERE you live would show signs of disgust or being rude when someone receives a gift as great as this. The problem is not that it is "another small town in kansas", but rather it's magnified because it's a small town in kansas.
I worked on this house as it was being built. I was proud and excited to be a part of it. Let's face it, that is as close to Hollywood as any of us will ever get. :)
It's too bad that they are letting the example of a few people in an entire town be the deciding factor on selling this wonderful home and moving their family.
However, after that story was printed what choice do they have. The line may have been unnoticed before but it has been clearly drawn now.
As far as the "disgusting comments" that the Journal so stated and gave examples of. Let me say this...
Although I do not agree with what was said and it was rude, YOU posted a blatant one sided attack based on "facts?" with pointed fingers at one little town. Which coincidentally was virtually leveled.
My question to the Salina Journal is this: Other then your recent attack on Chapman what have you done to help Chapman after the cameras quit rolling. Seems to me you picked up right where you left off, just a different side of the fence.
Based on your story the entire town is mean and does not like outsiders. So maybe we should follow your example and say everyone in Salina are spotlight chasing backstabbers.
WHATEVER!!!

Yup I see it now give us something and we will be your friend, Don't and you will be an outcast, Who cares about persoanl privacy, I am a very quiet person who hates to be around alot of people, but a few years ago I was welcomed into a community that still treats me with respect even though I hole up in my house and do not get out in public alot, and I have not given the community a BBQ! So if you want to live in a nice Little Town in Kansas Come on over to Lincoln. You will be accepted and cared about.

Any good P.R. person would tell you that the Tuts blew their only chance to say "Thank You" to the town of Chapman. If they had taken the money they would have spent on a mortgage and sponsored a big BBQ party in the park, everyone would have welcomed them and gotten to know them better. Instead, the Tuts locked themselves up and the good people of Chapman had a right to feel trampled by an ungrateful family of outsiders who wanted nothing to do with them.

OK so they are moving to Texas. For those of you who do not watch TV let me tell you that a house in Kansas that costs 200,000 and house in Texeas with the same square foot of living space costs more then $500,000. So yes they have to sell the Kansas house to have something to purchase the Texas house. And I have heard that people in Chapman don't like the military!

I never met the Tutwiler family but I too am a OIF Veteran and even though I never was shot , along with all others who served I went the that destinct possibility of not coming home. I grew up in Abilene, Ks and had close friends from Chapman . Lets come together and support this hero and be glad for his new found job and stop all this waste of the time that God has given us !

A Chapman resident of three years... says....
As a Chapman resident of 3 years...I have met and spoken to the Tutweilers a few times. I worked everday as a volunteer on their home. The Tutweilers are deserving. The Volunteers from the City of Chapman, Junction City, Manhattan, Abilene and many other cities and many states from America volunteered side-by-side on this home. It was a wonderful experience and I would do it again in a heart beat. Yes, they are selling their home, and I haven't spoken to them recently...but I did hear that Patrick received a better job and they are moving south to Texas. Sounds like a smart move considering the weather at this moment. Mrs. Tutweiler is a very quiet person and seemed shy to me the few times we spoke. I can't imagine how invasive this may have seemed to her and what the publicity and notariety that they received following this show would have done to this family. Yes, they were told about it, but when it happens...it's so different than what you would expect. Geesh, give them a break and give Chapman a break! Everyone has their good points and their bad points. I have had nothing but wonderful experiences from the people of Chapman. And my husband was military years ago...and we tell everyone how proud we are of that fact and that we are citizens of Chapman. I have never and I MEAN NEVER felt outcasted because of it, BUT I also am older and know that people are human! Wisdom comes with age. The Tutweilers deserve whatever blessings they can receive; whether it's from selling their home to starting a new job! What an adventure they have before them! To those of you who are cranky and negative...you need a new passion. A goal in life...find somewhere to volunteer! It's a good thing to do, especially when you can't focus on anything, but the negative.

Crystal Tutweiler gave another interview to Carol Lacer. It would be nice if that could be printed as well. Not all of Chapman feels the way we have been described. Many have reached out to the Tutweilers and are proud to have them in our community. It is a FEW that have expressed anger or jealousy and there have been some from outside of Chapman that have spoken cruel. Please quit judging our community by a few unhappy, jealous people. And please consider the second interview where Crystal explained her comments.

Mr. Wearing, maybe you should check out the facts regarding the supposed rumors about this family bashing the citizens of Chapman.
The family was given a gift and a chance to make a better life for themselves; what they did instead mis manage that gift, thus ending up with them having to sell the home. To live in any small town in which you did not grow up, takes becoming a part of the community and getting involved. This family did not even attempt to meld into the community. There were people who did not feel they should get the house. I am sure there are people in every town where an Extreme Home was built that felt that way. That is the price of being on national television. Did this family not realize that price?
Mr.Tutwiler's military service is admirable and the issues he struggles with are unfortunate and for that alone, he deserved that house. And I don't believe there is anyone who thought that he didn't. It is what they have done and how they have chosen to alienate and hide from the community which has led those in the community to believe some of the things they do. Mrs. Tutwiler had no right to ditch the whole town. Perhaps, she might do some self reflection of her own. Could it be that she has contributed to the opinion some people have of her? How much has she done to integrate herself into the community? Certainly everyone who spent long hours getting that house ready for her in freezing tempatures around the clock did. The whole situation is unfortunate.
Chapman and its citizens are not the enemy and if they are not happy, then leaving is what they should do. However, I seriously doubt things will be any better for them unless they do some serious soul searching of there own.

Home make-over says....
I just think it is greedy to have a home built for your family for a new start, then you try to sell it and make a HUGE profit. I would feel truely blessed to have a free home built for me by a National TV show and by the community. They cant be that greedy and evil or they would have never helped you out. I find this to be an excuse to make you look better. You will never get an opportunity like this again, I would count your blessings and security and reconsider your plan. I will add in closing, I do appreciate what your husband does for our Country, as I am a Military wife and I know what a soldier goes through on a daily basis.

Brent Kirkpatrick says....
Awhile back, my family and I decided to visit Chapman to see the home that Extreme Makeover built for the Tutwilers with the help of the citizens of Chapman. As we drove into town, we noticed shards of debris and clothing still hanging from the branches of trees across town. We saw large piles of shredded and twisted lumber where beautiful homes stood. There were trees that were twisted and gnarled by the devastating winds of the tornado. As we drove down the street and took in the carnage left behind, we couldn't help thinking about what it must've been like on that hellish night. We heard the screams of horror in our minds when the hurricane force winds were turning homes into mulch. We imagined what it must've looked like to see homes exploding into millions of pieces as the tornado slowly destroyed the town.
We turned into a convenience store and asked for the directions to the home that Extreme Makeover built. The lady I spoke to gave me the directions with what seemed like a sense of pride. So, we followed her directions and found the home. As we drove closer and closer, we saw a beautiful home built with dedication, love, and pride by the crew of Extreme Makeover and the citizens of Chapman. We stopped our vehicle and just stared at this beautiful home. My wife and I teared up because it was so touching that the citizens of Chapman would come together to provide this family with a home. That is one of the qualities I love about small towns. The people come together and help each other out.
God has truly blessed the Tutwilers by meeting their needs. He knew the situation they were in shortly after the tornado tore their town apart and He met those needs because He knew their hearts. See, God knows each and every one of us because He created us. He knows what's in our hearts. He knows what we will be like in the future because He knows all things. I truly believe that's why He chose to bless the Tutwilers with a beautiful new home. God knew what was in the hearts of the rest of the citizens of Chapman too. He knew they would have greed, jealosy, and evil thoughts. Isn't it amazing that God was correct in his assumption? A large group of people in Chapman are spreading vicious rumors, evil gossip, and malicious lies about this family because they are a military family and military families tend to move around a lot.
Mr. Tutwiler was on duty in Iraq when a sniper put a bullet through his neck and almost killed him. He took the bullet in defense of all the freedom we enjoy back home, including the right to spread those evil rumors, gossip and lies. Not only did he almost make the "ultimate sacrifice" for us, he lost his home during that hellish night. If anyone would be deserving of God's blessing, the Tutwilers would certainly qualify.
I would like to address all those "wonderful" citizens of Chapman who are spreading these evil, malicious, and disgusting rumors, lies, and gossip. Not only are you showing yourselves as a disgrace, you are discouraging anyone else from wanting to live there. I certainly would not want to move my family into a town filled with greedy, jealous, malicious, evil people who appear on the outside to be loving and caring. I would encourage each and every one of you to personally go up to the Tutwilers, sincerely apologize and ask for their forgiveness.
And, to the Tutwilers, I want to say this: Please don't let the citizens of Chapman give you the impression that citizens of other small towns are just as greedy, jealous and evil. My family and I live in Belleville, Ks and we, unlike the citizens of Chapman, appreciate all that you have done for our country, Mr. Tutwiler. The citizens of Belleville are truly loving and caring. I moved up here in 2007 and didn't know anyone except the woman that would soon be my wife. Everyone I encountered in Belleville smiled and waved at me like I had lived here all my life. In fact, Belleville reminds me of Mayberry on The Andy Griffith Show. So, I would encourage you and your family to check out our quaint, lovely town and think about possibly moving here!! We would love to have you and we would truly treat you and your family with the love, respect, and honor that you deserve. I just want to end this piece by saying we are so very proud of you and your family for all you have done for us as a family, for the state of Kansas, and ultimately for this nation!! May God continue to bless you all the days of your life.

I read the article about all the evil gossip and malicious rumors the citizens of Chapman are spreading about the Tutwilers. Mr. Tutwiler took a bullet in his neck so we could have the have the freedoms we enjoy today. God truly blessed the Tutwiler family with a beautiful home. I know there are many people in Chapman who deserve a home built for them by Extreme Makeover. Instead of driving them out of town with evil acts, I would think the citizens of Chapman would be grateful to have such a courageous man and his family living among them. It just goes to show how greedy, hypocritical, evil, jealous, and low some people can be. Evidently, the citizens of Chapman do not appreciate what Mr. Tutwiler did for his country. Maybe those people who are spreading the gossip, rumors, etc. would rather live in a country where freedom of speech is strictly a dream that may never come true. To the Tutwiler's: I would like to invite you to check out Belleville, Ks. I moved up here in 2007 and fell in love with this town the instant I stepped foot in it. The citizens of Belleville are wonderful people!! They look out after each other, help each other out, and really make strangers feel welcome!! I keep telling people how Belleville reminds me so much of Mayberry from The Andy Griffith Show because of the Morals and Ethics instilled in its citizens. We would be blessed to have such a wonderful, courageous family such as you in our community!! Unlike the citizens of Chapman, we appreciate those who put their lives on the line for their country!! To those of you who are spreading the gossip and rumors, I can now understand why Extreme Makeover didn't choose you when they decided to build a house in Chapman.
