Accused teacher appears in court
RUSSELL -- A Lucas-Luray High School English teacher made her first appearance in Russell County District Court Thursday on a charge of unlawful sexual relations, stemming from allegations that she had a sexual relationship with one of her male students.
Nina Urban remains free on $10,000 bond. A preliminary hearing date will be set later, said attorney Michael S. Holland II. Holland did not attend Thursday's brief hearing before District Magistrate Judge Marty Clark, but he has been retained to represent Urban.
Urban turned herself in to local authorities and posted bond on Jan. 29. Her arrest followed an investigation that commenced after the student's parents called the sheriff's office on Jan. 20 and alleged that their son and Urban had been having a sexual relationship.
Urban was in her third year teaching at the school, superintendent David Couch said. She has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the case.
