Salina’s got talent — only they’re from McPherson.
A McPherson brother and sister singing duo were chosen winners of the first Salina’s Got Talent competition Thursday at the Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts, 151 S. Santa Fe.
Michael Holman, 20, a sophomore at McPherson College, and his sister Alyson, 23, a recent McPherson College graduate, were awarded first-place honors for their rendition of the Celine Dion-Andrea Bocelli duet “The Prayer.”
The siblings won a $300 cash prize, plus the opportunity to be the opening act at the Smoky Hill River Festival Festival Jam June 11 at Oakdale Park.
Second place was given to Salinan Nick LaMarca, who sang an original tune and accompanied himself on electric guitar. He won $100. Third place and $50 went to Salinan Taylor Kline, who sang and played acoustic guitar to a song by the rock band Oasis.
Judges for the competition were Michael Spicer, executive director of Salina Community Theatre; artist and photographer Carolyn Wedel; Loren Banninger, a teacher at Salina South High School and bassist for the local band The Blades; and Rob Northcutt, singer/songwriter for the country band Northcutt.

It seemed you had to be a singer to have much of a chance to make the top 10. Oh, and isn't this "Salina's Got Talent", not "McPherson" or "Abilene's" Got Talent, as two of the 10 acts were from out of town, making it a bit more frustrating for those really wanting to be chosen as "Salina's" Top 10. Among the criteria for being chosen included originality/creativity as well as an energetic "Stage Presence" and the ability to connect with the audience. However, only about half of the acts brought originality to their performances and I thought, although talented, some had little movement or created little vibe with the audience. I mostly feel bad for all the children who had high hopes but paid the $15 to audition, only to awaken to the sad truth that they were up against more experienced adult entertainers.

Should have stated and made rules apply. The auditions were a big joke. Noone wanted to pay money to do so and &10 dollar ticket's??? For what I must say this was very disapointing to myself, my family and record label I represent!!
