Take Charge Challenge kicks off Saturday

Backers of a competition designed to reduce Salina’s energy use are inviting the public to get energized about lowering their utility bills.
Salina is competing against Quinter, Merriam, Mount Hope/Haven, Wellington and Kinsley in the Take Charge Challenge. The winner will be the community that, beginning this month, reduces its energy use the most over the course of a year.
The town that wins the challenge wins a $10,000 prize, in the form of a wind turbine to help power one of its schools, and solar panels for a civic building or cash to complete a civic energy efficiency project, such as installing energy-efficient windows.
To kick off the competition, an energy fair is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the Salina Central High School gym. Agencies and businesses will have booths to demonstrate energy efficiency measures and give away items to help homeowners use less energy.
