Saint Francis raising money for gifts

Saint Francis Community Services hopes to raise $75,000 through its Give Hope campaign to provide Christmas gifts to Kansas children in foster care.

The campaign kicks off Monday and runs through Dec. 15. To donate, go to www.st-francis.org or call 1-800-423-1342.

Donations will be used to buy Christmas gifts for children in Saint Francis foster care facilities. Money raised above the goal will be used to help care for the foster children throughout the year.

Man arrested after hiding in Dumpster

A man accused of stealing money from a 24-hour gymnasium was arrested Thursday when he was found trying to hide in a nearby restaurant Dumpster.

Jacob M. Johnson, 23, 856 Seneca, is accused of entering the Snap Fitness gymnasium, 2629 Market Place, shortly after 12 a.m. Thursday without a membership card, said Salina Police Capt. Mike Sweeney.

Johnson started bothering people who were working out, and then he was seen grabbing a box containing $17 in currency and leaving, Sweeney said. Police who were called to investigate found Johnson in a Dumpster behind Subway, 2610 S. Ninth.

Johnson could be charged with aggravated burglary, criminal trespass, theft and obstructing the legal process for initially giving officers a false name, Sweeney said.

Two tech schools get $100K in grants

Grants totalling nearly $100,000 were announced Friday for two area technical colleges, for use in furthering technical education.

The federal grants were announced by the Kansas Board of Regents, and include:

n $44,045 for Salina Area Technical College, to purchase CNC lathes and other equipment to support the advanced manufacturing program.

n $52,084 to North Central Kansas Technical College in Beloit and Hays, to support a welding certificate program in partnership with Fort Hays State University.

Man pleads guilty in attacks on elderly

HUTCHINSON -- A central Kansas man will get life in prison for sexually assaulting and killing an 85-year-old woman.

Marvin Gifford Jr., of McPherson, pleaded guilty Friday to capital murder in the fatal May 18 attack on Pearl Arthaud at her assisted-living apartment in Buhler. He also pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting Arthaud and two other elderly women in Reno County in April.
