SMITH CENTER — A security camera captured video of a man stealing a 32-inch flatscreen television, six or more DVD movies and other items from the ALCO store in Smith Center.
Smith County Sheriff Bruce Lehman said the man, believed to be in his 20s, walked into the store about 9:30 a.m. Thursday, grabbed a shopping cart and began to put merchandise into it.
The TV was a display model that was strapped to a counter and had to be disconnected.
“He moved the TV around, discovered it was wired down, and he had to go back outside, presumably to get some pliers or something to cut the cable with. The guy unhooked it and put it in the cart,” Lehman said.
The man left the store at about 9:45. Shortly after, the store manager noticed the TV missing and called the sheriff’s office.
The value of the lost merchandise exceeded $1,000. The TV alone was priced at about $780, the sheriff said.
Lehman said the man didn’t appear to be armed. The burglar is described at 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighing about 140 pounds. He was wearing a ball cap, Lehman said.
“We do have some suspects that we’re going to start working on, not local,” Lehman said.
