Seven guitars taken from Hanson Music

Seven guitars were taken from SM Hanson Music, 335 S. Clark, early Wednesday.

According to a Salina police report, officers went to the store about 1:15 a.m. Wednesday in response to an alarm. The front door glass had been shattered and three electric guitars and four bass guitars were missing.

Loss was estimated at $6,100.

No arrests have been made, according to Salina police Capt. Mike Sweeney.

Send us information about decorations

Christmas lights have begun illuminating homes throughout Salina. We know some Salinans have spent long hours -- and perhaps risked bodily injury -- climbing ladders to string Christmas lights on their homes, trees and bushes. So don't let all that work and beauty go unnoticed.

The Journal will feature some of these displays in a story in the paper and include others in an interactive map on the Journal's Web site, www.salina.com.

If you or someone you know has a display you think the Journal should know about, contact Sharon Montague at 822-1411 or by e-mail at smontague@salina.com.

Salina man loses $18K in Internet scam

A Salina man has lost more than $18,000 in an Internet scam.

According to a Salina police report, Anthony D. Nowlin, 39, began an Internet correspondence in August with a woman who claimed to be a civil engineer doing business in West Africa.

During a three-month period, Nowlin sent the woman a Web cam, an iPhone and three money orders totaling $9,405. The money was to be used to fly the woman and her children to Salina, said Capt. Mike Sweeney of the Salina Police Department.

On Nov. 21, Nowlin received a check for $10,000, allegedly from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. Nowlin deposited the check and was instructed to send $8,700 back to an address in West Africa. The check later was determined to be fraudulent, Sweeney said.

When Nowlin contacted the woman to tell her the check had bounced, she became angry and told him she was not coming to America because he had accused her of being a liar, Sweeney said. She has not contacted him since.
