GYPSUM -- Southeast of Saline School was presented with the Energy Efficiency Leader in Education Award from Trane on Tuesday for its work in reducing energy use at the school.
Back in 2009, a group of students in a Leadership 101 class approached administrators and the school board, encouraging upgrades that would save energy and money, including energy-efficient lighting and a new heating and air-conditioning system.
The upgrades are expected to cut roughly 21 percent from the district's energy bill, saving $80,000 annually.
In addition, high school students, with assistance from Trane, have created several lessons on energy efficiency. The students are teaching those lessons to fifth-graders at Southeast.
