Voters send Brungardt back to the Kansas Senate

Incumbent Sen. Pete Brungardt, R-Salina, defeated challenger Abner Perney by a two-to-one margin Tuesday.
The unofficial total, with all but three Ottawa County precincts reporting, was 15,780 to 7,848.
Brungardt, who has represented the 24th Senate District since 2001, has a reputation for being moderate and pragmatic. That gave Perney a relatively small target to hit, and by his own admission Perney’s campaign was nontraditional.
“I have not bothered people in their homes. I have not inundated them with junk mail,” said Perney, who is a Salina city commissoner and has a reputation for identifying with the working class.
Brungardt said that he ran a conventional campaign.
“A little bit of everything,” he said. “Six parades, forums, several areas door-to-door with my wife. I did more direct mail than in the past.”
